Somatics

Somatics, as developed by Thomas Hanna, is a movement-based approach to health that focuses on retraining the brain's control over muscles through slow, mindful movements called "somatic exercises." The core principle is that many physical problems stem from "sensory-motor amnesia" - a condition where the brain loses conscious control over certain muscle groups, leading them to remain chronically contracted.

Hanna's method teaches people to regain voluntary control over their muscles by performing gentle, internally-focused movements that help the nervous system remember how to fully contract and then completely relax muscle groups. Rather than stretching or strengthening muscles from the outside, somatics works from the inside out, using the brain's natural learning capacity to restore proper muscle function.

This approach can benefit every body and any body.

For those with chronic tension and pain, somatics addresses the root cause rather than just symptoms. Many people carry unconscious muscle contractions from stress, injury, or repetitive activities. Somatic exercises help release these chronic holding patterns, often providing relief where other approaches have failed.

Athletes discover enhanced performance through improved coordination, more efficient movement patterns, and reduced risk of injury. By developing greater internal awareness and control, athletes can move with less effort and greater precision while avoiding the compensatory patterns that often lead to overuse injuries.

For healthy aging, somatics offers a way to counteract the gradual loss of mobility and the development of common age-related postures like forward head posture or rounded shoulders. Regular practice helps maintain the brain's connection to all parts of the body, keeping movement fluid and preventing the "stiffening" that many assume is inevitable with age.

The beauty of somatics lies in its accessibility - the movements are gentle enough for anyone to perform, yet sophisticated enough to create profound changes in how people move and feel in their bodies.
